Archive: Abandoned DT Log Reunion Book Introduction.

Introduction

In 2002, the year of the El Capitan High School 10-year reunion, I was all about optimism without much of a solid foundation amid turmoil with my immediate family.  This was easily a time when money was not a problem and Bronwynn and I were doing a good job wasting it.

So, my plan was to create a DT Log Book to distribute to a select few people at the reunion.

I don’t remember the circumstances, but this plan, along with attending the reunion, was canceled due to an unforeseen financial emergency.

So here I present the introduction to that document after the leap.

Facebook is succeeding where others have failed.

I can feel my life slipping away, exploding exponentially forward death now that I have come in contact with old friends via Facebook.  This is it: this is the gigantic time-waster that has its talons firmly embedded in me.

Oh, I’ve eschewed the online gaming community.  World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, Second Life, those games have evaporated the lives of many people I loved, much more than alcohol or meth.  Nancy Reagan should start a “Just Say No” movement against those RPGs.

MySpace could have done it, but I’ve resisted that as well.  Maybe it’s that the site lets people design their page so that others will end up with a migraine or seizure.  I’ve pimped my space out and rather than continuously updating it obsessively, I’ve let it sit.

Now Facebook is in the process of assimilating me into it’s Borg-like structure.  I found out that I am now BFF with Muku Nizam because we have a 66% compatibility in movies we like.  It’s the continuous updates of what other people are doing.  Now I know I have a sphere of influence.  For example, I become a fan of the Coen Brothers, and then see Muku and Brad Boggess do the same a few hours later!  Fascinating!

I have two days off, Monday and Tuesday, and now I face Wednesday knowing I could have done a lot more around the house before I cruise back to work, making the Man richer.

Damn it, Facebook!  Give me back my life!

Dan Touchette’s Timebox: Episodes 1-6 online.

Something I started working back in the last century (still sounds weird, doesn’t it) – my serial novella Dan Touchette’s Timebox, née “The Future Will Hold”, may actually be completed sometime this year.

It will be the longest I have ever spent on a writing project: 16 years and some change.  The problem with that first go around (besides the fact that my writing sucked at age seventeen) was that my friends who were mentioned in the draft were anticipating a very happy future in this story.

Instead I socked them over the head with a disparate dystopia where the SMM club ended up crazy and homeless on the streets of crowded Santee.  Needless to say, they hated it, episode two of a pathetic two episodes.

***

The current incarnation is still very much a rough draft work-in-progress.  I am left unsatisfied with some of the details published thus far, especially episodes 4 and 5.  I am still toying with the idea of changing the names to protect the innocence (or guilt) of my friends and acquaintences, just like Jack Kerouac.  But I must admit that I do not intention this in marketing it as a serious work of fiction – unless I can make it into a movie.

Feedback is helpful as always.  This is a work of fiction that I am writing as cool entertainment, a pleasure read.  I’ve got a couple of fans on Ozone&Shadow, and I am grateful for that.

Up next: Episode 7, Episode 8 Part I and Episode 8 Part II plus Epilogue.

I’ll see you in the future!
